Weighted Grade Calculator

Course grades, clearly explained

Combine assignment or category percentages using the weights from your syllabus. Blank scores stay ungraded; an entered zero counts as a real score.

CategoryGrade (%)Course weight (%)Action
Course grade84.50%

Use percentage weights for the whole course. Total weights must not exceed 100%. Calculations run in your browser.

How to calculate a weighted grade

  1. Enter each category or assignment name.
  2. Enter its percentage score and its share of the full course grade.
  3. Add more rows as needed. Leave a score blank if that work has not been graded.

Contribution = category grade × category weight ÷ 100. Add the contributions for the course total. When only part of the course is graded, divide the earned contributions by the graded weight and multiply by 100 to find the average across completed work.

A worked example

CategoryScoreWeightContribution
Homework90%20%18 points
Quizzes80%30%24 points
Exams85%50%42.5 points

The weights total 100%, so the course grade is 18 + 24 + 42.5 = 84.5%.

If the exams are still ungraded, homework and quizzes contribute 42 points toward the full course. The completed-work average is 42 ÷ 50 × 100 = 84%. That is an average across the graded half of the course, not the final grade.

Use the weights from your syllabus

Do not enter a raw points total as a percentage weight. First convert an assignment score to a percentage: earned points ÷ possible points × 100. If your course uses a straight total-points system, add all earned points and all possible points instead of inventing category weights.

This tool uses fixed course weights. Dropped assignments, replacement tests, curves, and extra-credit rules need to be applied according to your teacher’s policy. It does not automatically model those rules.

Frequently asked questions

Why must weights add up to 100%?

They describe shares of the whole course. You can enter less than 100% for a partial view, but the result will be labeled as a completed-work average. More than 100% produces an error rather than silently changing your weights.

Should I enter zero for unfinished work?

No. Leave the score blank until it is graded. Only enter zero when that is the actual score you intend to include.

Can I find the score I need on my final?

Yes. Once you know your current grade excluding the final, use the final grade calculator.
